WHO WE ARE
In 2014, Zakat International Australia (ZIA) emerged from a simple yet profound realisation: when suffering intensifies in the world, silence is not an option. A dedicated group of Sydney volunteers came together; moved by the rising hardship faced by families in India and Pakistan, and compelled by the urgent cry of those whose struggles were too often unseen. What began as a spark of compassion became a mission that demanded action. As the pain of countless families came to light, we knew that standing by was never an answer. Guided by justice and mercy, we chose consistent compassion over grand gestures; believing that every act of care can rewrite someone’s tomorrow
We are committed to keeping 100% of your donations flowing to people in need.
From these early efforts, Zakat International Australia took shape around a simple conviction: ordinary people, guided by sincerity and purpose, can create extraordinary change. In 2015, we formally registered in Australia, carrying a name and ethic rooted in Ikhlas: sincerity, integrity, excellence, and the pursuit of goodness in every action. We remain unwavering in our mission: to uplift the vulnerable, stand with the forgotten, and serve every person with dignity, empathy, and unshakeable compassion. Inspired by the timeless words of the
Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم): “The most beloved people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to others,”
We continue to walk a path defined by service, unity, and a deep sense of shared humanity.
Today, Zakat International Australia stands as a beacon of hope and resilience, a collective voice for the oppressed, a source of relief for the poor, and a steadfast supporter of our brothers and sisters in Gaza, Palestine, and beyond.
Our journey continues, driven not by recognition, but by the enduring belief that every life matters and every act of kindness creates ripples far beyond what we can see.
Our Vision
We envision a world where no human being is crushed by hunger, poverty, or despair; a world where every individual, no matter their circumstance, receives the urgent care and dignity they deserve. We believe that when every person has access to life’s basic needs, humanity moves one step closer to a future where no one is forgotten and no one is left behind.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to deliver sustainable humanitarian relief, uplift vulnerable communities, and build long‑term pathways to stability and hope. Through compassion, strong partnerships, and innovative solutions, we strive to restore dignity, strengthen resilience, and empower people to rebuild their lives with confidence and purpose.
100% Donation Ethos (How We Keep It)
Our vision is to keep 100% of your Zakat and Sadaqah donations flowing to people in need. We are powered by volunteers wherever possible; however, some essential services (logistics, compliance, safeguarding, specialist field staff) do require paid support to deliver aid safely and effectively. To protect the 100% flow of your relief funds, we invite supporters to optionally contribute to operations Fi Sabilillah (for the sake of Allah) through a separate, clearly marked fund.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Zakat Al-Maal?
Zakat Al-Maal is the fifth pillar of Islam, an act of worship that purifies your wealth and uplifts those most in need. If you’ve held qualifying assets above the nisab threshold for one full Hijri (lunar) year, it’s time to calculate and fulfil your obligation. This easy-to-use Zakat Calculator helps you determine your 2.5% Zakat amount accurately, based on up-to-date gold and silver prices in Australia
What is the difference between Zakat al-Maal and Zakat al-Fitr?
Zakat al-Maal is the yearly 2.5% charity on wealth, while Zakat al-Fitr is a one-time charity given before Eid for every member of the household.
Who Must Pay Zakat Al-Maal?
If you are a Muslim, an adult of sound mind, and holding zakatable wealth above the nisab threshold for a full lunar year, then Zakat becomes obligatory on your qualifying assets.
What Assets Are Zakatable?
This calculator accounts for all major zakatable categories: cash on hand & in bank, gold and silver (including jewellery), shares, crypto, and investments, business goods & stock, receivable debts (that can be recovered), rental or investment income, and agricultural produce (as applicable).
How Does the Zakat Calculator Work?
The calculator works in simple steps: 1) Enter Your Assets – Input your values for cash, savings, gold, silver, investments, receivables, and more. 2) Live Nisab Check – The calculator automatically checks against the silver nisab value, updated daily in AUD. 3) Instant Zakat Calculation – It calculates 2.5% of your zakatable wealth, instantly showing you the total due. 4) Donate Securely – Once calculated, you can fulfil your obligation securely online through Al-Ihsan Foundation, in full accordance with Shariah principles.

What is the Nisab Threshold?
The nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess before they are obligated to pay Zakat. Our calculator uses the silver nisab value (612.36 grams of silver), which is updated daily based on current market prices in AUD. If your total zakatable wealth is below this threshold, you are not required to pay Zakat.
Can I Enter My Zakat Amount Directly?
Yes! If you’ve already calculated your Zakat amount elsewhere, you can enter it directly in the calculator without going through all the calculation steps. Simply enter your amount and proceed to payme
What Is Sadqah?
Sadaqah is voluntary charity given for the sake of Allah (SWT) to earn reward and protection for yourself and your loved ones
What Is Fidyah?
Fidyah is a form of compensation for someone who is unable to fast in Ramadan due to a long-term or permanent reason and cannot make up the missed fasts later. It is a mercy. It is a concession granted by Allah جل جلاله.
Allah جل جلاله says: “And upon those who are unable to fast, a compensation [is required]: feeding a poor person.” – Qur’an 2:184
Who Needs to Pay Fidyah?
Fidyah applies to those who:
- Are unable to fast due to chronic or long-term illness
- Are elderly and not expected to regain the ability to fast
- Would face serious harm if they fast, with no realistic prospect of recovery
If fasting may become possible later, Fidyah does not apply
Who Does NOT Need to Pay Fidyah?
Fidyah does not apply to people who miss fasts due to temporary reasons,
such as:
- Temporary illness expected to improve
- Travel
- Menstruation or post-natal bleeding
In these cases, the obligation is Qada (making up the missed fasts), not Fidyah
.How Is Fidyah Fulfilled?
Fidyah is fulfilled by:
- Feeding one person in need for each missed day of fasting
- Fidyah: $15 per missed day
Fidyah turns your obligation into nourishment and relief for others
Fidyah and Pregnancy or Breastfeeding
Pregnant and breastfeeding women are required to fast in Ramadan.
However, if a woman reasonably fears harm:
- To her own health, or
- To her child’s health or wellbeing
She may break her fast.
What is required if the fast is broken?
15.1. If she fears harm to her own health She may break the fast, and the obligation is:
- Qada – making up the missed days after Ramadan
13.2. If she fears harm to her child She may also break the fast.
- All scholars agree that Qada (making up the days) after Ramadan is required
- Some scholars additionally held that feeding one poor person per missed day is also required.
13.3 What if missed fasts have accumulated over many years?
If a woman has missed many fasts over several years due to repeated pregnancy and breastfeeding, and she is currently unable to make up the fasts due to health or capacity Then:
- She may feed one poor person for each missed day
- Qada is not required, unless she later becomes able to fast
To get a correct ruling: First, consult a trusted, qualified Islamic scholar, or shaykh, for guidance specific to your circumstances.
What Is Kaffarah?
Kaffarah is an expiation required for specific serious violations.
Unlike Fidyah, it does not relate to inability. It applies when an obligation is deliberately broken. It is a way to:
- Seek Allah’s forgiveness
- Make amends for what was broken
- Fulfil a missed obligation properly
Kaffarah applies only in specific situations.
When is Kaffarah required?
- Deliberately breaking afast during Ramadan
This applies when a person:
- Knows they are fasting
- Deliberately breaks the fast
- Has no valid excuse
- Does so during Ramadan
Breaking a sworn oath or vow
This applies when a person:
Swears by Allah – Yameen
Or makes a binding vow – Nadher
Then knowingly breaks it
*Consult a knowledgeable scholar for guidance based on your specific circumstances, and to ensure proper compliance.
What Actions Require Kaffarah for Breaking a Ramadan Fast?
If done knowingly and by choice while fasting in Ramadan, the following require both Qada (making up the fast) and Kaffarah:
- Eating or drinking something normally consumed
- Engaging in intimacy during fasting hours
What is the Kaffarah for breaking a Ramadan fast?
The primary obligation
- Fasting 60 consecutive days, If fasting is genuinely not possible
- Feeding 60 people in need, Kaffarah for Ramadan fast: $15 × 60 = $900
This Kaffarah applies only to Ramadan fasts.
Do all four Sunni schools agree that Kaffarah must be calculated according to the giver’s local cost?
Yes, all Sunni madhahib (Hanafi, Shafi‘i, Maliki, Hanbali) agree it is based on the giver’s local food cost.
Can a person reduce their Kaffarah amount by sending it to a cheaper country?
No, the Kaffārah amount must follow the giver’s local value, even if the payment is sent overseas
Is it allowed to distribute Kaffarah in another country?
Yes, it is allowed; but the amount must still equal the giver’s local Kaffarah value.
Why must Kaffarah be calculated according to the giver’s local food cost?
Because Kaffarah is a penalty and purification, and the Sharia sets the value according to the giver’s economic standard, not the recipient’s.
Kaffarah for Breaking a Sworn Oath or Vow
Kaffarah for breaking an oath (yameen) or vow (nadher).
How this Kaffarah is fulfilled
- Feed 10 people in need, or
- Clothe 10 people in need, or
- If financially unable, fast 3 days
Kaffarah for an oath or vow: $15 × 10 = $150
Allah ﷻ says: “The expiation for breaking an oath is feeding ten poor people… or clothing them… And whoever cannot afford that must fast three days.” – Qur’an 5:89
Unsure Which Applies to You?
Many people are unsure, and that’s okay.
If you’re uncertain:
- Consult a medical professional for health-related concerns and
- Seek guidance from a trusted, knowledgeable Islamic scholar
Clarity matters in worship, and Allah ﷻ does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.
Fidyah and Kaffarah: A Balance of Responsibility and Mercy
Fidyah and Kaffarah exist within Islam’s balance of responsibility and mercy.
Allah ﷻ reminds us: “Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear.” – Qur’an 2:286
When fulfilled with sincerity, these obligations become a means of relief, forgiveness, and continued closeness to Allah.
What does your 100% Donation Policy mean?
It means every dollar you give for Zakat/Sadaqah projects goes to beneficiaries i.e. those who are in need (as defined by Shariah). Delivery essentials are funded separately via optional Fi Sabilillah contributions.
Why do you still need Fi Sabilillah (operations) support?
A: Volunteers power much of our work, but certain critical functions, logistics, compliance, travelling, safeguarding, and specialist field roles; must be funded to deliver aid safely, transparently, and at scale.
Can I choose where my donation is used?
Yes. You can give to Zakat/Sadaqah (100% to beneficiaries) or Fi Sabilillah (to sustain delivery). Each option is clearly labelled.
Do you distribute aid in multiple countries?
Yes. We distribute your contributions to eligible recipients across multiple countries, prioritising urgent need, Sharia compliance, and verified partner capacity.
